The Best New Trucks for Families

Room for the Kids and Then Some

Long gone are the days of pickup trucks being used exclusively utility. Modern pickups have become a go-to family vehicle thanks to a combination of generally rugged capability and, in many cases, very luxurious cabins.

The best truck for a family varies from one household to the next. Ford offers a six‑figure luxury option with the F‑150 Platinum Plus. Ram equips its 1500 pickup with an available air suspension. Honda’s Ridgeline uses a unibody chassis for a more car‑like ride. The Ford Maverick even starts below $30,000. With all these options, it’s fair to say there’s a pickup truck for just about any family.

Ford Maverick

Not every family needs a huge pickup and just because the Ford Maverick is our smallest truck here, it punches above its class in other ways. The 37” of backseat legroom bests the larger Toyota Tacoma by 3” and in hybrid spec, no other pickup can match the 38-mpg combined rating of the Maverick. That helps for families on a budget as does the fact that the feature-packed Lariat costs less than $40,000.

Towing tops out at just 4,000 pounds, but the 4.5’ bed offers decent utility, forward collision mitigation comes standard, and the unibody platform should translate to a nicer ride than its F-150 big brother.

Honda Ridgeline

If you like Honda’s SUV lineup as family vehicles, but require the benefits of a pickup truck bed, the Ridgeline is for you. Like the Maverick, the Ridgeline skips body-on-frame construction for the cushier ride of a unibody setup. It offers a usable 5,000 pounds of towing capacity and boasts a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

Back seat legroom of this four door-only pickup matches the Maverick and the amenities list should keep all members of the family happy. Every Honda Ridgeline comes with tri-zone automatic climate control and wireless smartphone mirroring, while upper level trims featured heated front and rear seats with leather.

Chevrolet Colorado

For those looking to the midsize truck segment that need serious towing power for family trips, the Chevy Colorado steps up with a 7,700-pound max rating. Crew cab models are somewhat light on rear legroom at 35”, but the smaller size versus the likes of a Silverado make for easy parking lot maneuvering.

The standard 11.3” central display with a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the Colorado ideal for connected families. And for the families who like to get after it in the outdoors, the Colorado ZR2 delivers serious off-road capability.

Toyota Tundra

Toyota’s full-size Tundra is somewhat off the pace of its competitors when it comes to crew cab rear legroom, at 42”. However, the 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS should put families at ease. Capable of towing up to 12,000 pounds, the Tundra is ready for travel trailer adventures and on the advanced safety tech front, every Tundra comes with forward collision mitgation, adaptive cruise control, and a lane-keeping system.

Limited models dial up the ritz with climate-controlled front seats and a 14” infotainment touchscreen, while the range-topping Capstone is downright opulent with power-deployable running boards, special cabin detailing, and acoustic-laminated front door glass.

Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevy Silverado is the classic do-it-all family-friendly pickup truck with 43” of rear legroom for crew cab models, up to 13,300 pounds of trailering capacity, and a host of advanced driver aids across the lineup. However, it is the available Duramax diesel engine that helps the Chevy stand out in the full-size truck field. Though you need a gas-powered V8 for top tow ratings, the 495 lb-ft of torque from the diesel makes it the ideal towing partner and it’s rated for 29 mpg on the highway.

The Silverado earns top safety marks from the NHTSA, while creature comforts range from a heated steering wheel and front seats on the mid-tier LT to a power-sliding rear window, and wireless phone charging on the High Country variant.

Ford F-150

If it’s choice you’re after with family-oriented pickup trucks, get a load of the 2025 Ford F-150 lineup. The XLT features a power driver’s seat, FCM, LKS, an all-digital dashboard, and automatic climate control for about $47,000. Lariat models jump past $62,000, but boast leather, climatized front seats, and BlueCruise hands-free driving.

You can crack $100,000 for a super comfy Platinum Plus with massaging seats or take the family on a Baja 1000 weekend with the mighty Raptor. All while delivering 44” of rear legroom and up to 13,500 pounds of towing capacity.

Ram 1500

For maximum comfort and peace of mind in a full-size pickup format, you’ll be hard-pressed to outdo the Ram 1500. Unlike the rest of the leaf-sprung segment, the Ram uses coil rear springs and when paired with the optional air-powered dampers, you’re looking at a remarkably plush ride for a big pickup truck. Plus, it boasts a segment-leading 45” of backseat legroom with the crew cab and a NHTSA 5-star overall safety rating.

Like it’s competition, the level of creature comfort ranges from plenty nice in the Laramie with two rows of heated seats and automatic climate control to incredibly nice in the Tungsten with its 23-speaker audio system, massaging seats, and passenger-side touchscreen interface.
